A group of men gave up a full day of work to support St Mary's Hospice.

The employees from GSK Ulverston used their time to help redecorate office space and corridors at the hospice.

The group of five was kept busy by painting the top floor of the hospice, working to give the building a 'much-needed spruce up'.

Shane Langhorn, who volunteered to do the painting, said: "This was the fifth time I have been part of a team from GSK volunteering at St Mary's.

"We find it really rewarding helping out there, and we are always very well looked after with lovely food and drinks, which is an added bonus."

Shane was joined by Mark, James, Philip and Nick from GSK, a medical company that puts volunteering at the heart of its agenda.

GSK's Together Days allow their employees to escape work for a day to support a local cause or community project.

The scheme gives the group the opportunity to return to St Mary's in the future with Shane explaining that plans are already beginning to take shape.

He added: "I'm hoping to get the team back at the hospice again this year as Katy - the St Mary's Facilities Manager - has a few more tasks she would like us to do."

The hospice was full of praise for the group's efforts, thanking the business for giving up their resources to support the local area.

Annabelle Holloway, St Mary's Corporate Partnerships Manager, said: "It was really generous of the team to offer us their time and of GSK to release them for the day.

"They've done a fantastic job of painting those rooms – and every time we can save money by using volunteers on something like this, which needed to be done, it means that we have more funds available for patient care."
