PLANS to build up to 40 new homes in south Cumbria have been given the green light by the council.

Westmorland and Furness Council has granted outline planning permission to applicant L&W Wilson (Higham) Ltd to build up to 40 homes on Barn Hey off Flookburgh Road in Allithwaite.

This comes after members of the planning committee for South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) approved the scheme in March 2023 and delegated authority to the development management team leader to draft additional conditions,

The additional conditions related to carrying out a archaeological survey on the site and removing permitted development to the plots on the northern boundary of the site.

A legal agreement between the council, the developer and owners of the land was then struck in January 2024.

The 1.65-hectare site lies to the west of Allithwaite, bounded by the B5277 to the south, and Locker Lane to the west, which would be widened, and from which a new access road to the site would be built.

The scheme recieved objections from Allithwaite and Cartmel Parish Council as well as 28 public representations.

Two similar schemes to build 37 houses had previously been refused by planners in 2021 and 2022.

Westmorland and Furness Council approved the application on February 22.
