The owners of a new Lake District shop are getting ready for the official reveal of finished renovations.

Grasmere Gather and Thirteen Valleys Kitchen is replacing the Grasmere Garden Village with months' worth of work to get the shop ready coming to a head on March 22.

The team acquired the property back in June last year but have kept the business open while the changes have been made.

One of the directors said: "When we bought it, the site in Grasmere was looking quite sad and most of the products sold there came from abroad.

"Our aim was to make something that people can be proud off as well as showing off what the Lake District has to offer at the same time."

Progress to get the shop ready has been slow with the end of the high season in September representing the start of when work could get properly started.

In November, Grasmere Gather joined forces with Herdwick Ltd, who specialise in tweed made solely from the wool of Herdwick sheep.

Showcasing the work of local farmers through highlighting the products they make and through art and photography from renowned Cumbrian residents such as Amy Bateman, is a fundamental part of the business.

"We noticed that the Lake District is full of shops selling the same things so our idea grew into becoming a physical space to introduce visitors to products people in the area are making, which 'gather' came to mean.

"We want to represent the best of Cumbria but we also want to support the amazing community in Grasmere as well."

Avid trail runners in the Lake District and residents in the village, the directors want the business to encompass the best of the area they love.

They added: "We've invested hugely in the business but also the ones which we'll be promoting in the shop.

"We're also maintaining year-round, local employment, which is why we didn't want to close the doors to the garden centre until the reopening."

Now, with March 22 fast approaching and the 13 Valleys Kitchen inside the centre awaiting customers, the directors believe the hard work is finally looking to be worth it.
