THE partner of a man who died in a Lake District tragedy is raising money for a mountain rescue team.

Alex Neely was fatally injured in a fall on a Scafell Pike hike on July 2 2023.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue team received a call alerting them to a lone walker who was found dead by another passing walker.

"It was the volunteers of the Wasdale Mountain Rescue team that brought Alex home and for that, they hold a special place in my heart," said Mr Neely's partner Jamie Pickervance.

As a tribute to his partner, Jamie is running in the Manchester Marathon on April 14 and raising funds for the mountain team.

"Alex signed me up for the Manchester Marathon, making this challenge feel a lot more personal to me and fitting to complete in his honour," said Jamie.

Jamie, from St Helens, has already hit his target of £3,000 and said it has been 'incredible' watching the amount of donations and messages people have left him.

He said: "I'm just trying to raise as much publicity to it as I can because it is a really good cause. They do so much work for people every day, every hour so any bit of help obviously goes a long way.

"I'd like to think that he would be proud, regardless of the circumstances, this would be a charity that would fit for both of us because it ties into a lot of our hobbies."

A spokesperson for Wasdale Mountain Rescue team said on social media: "Jamie, here at Wasdale MRT we remain extremely sorry for your loss but thank you enormously for your fundraising efforts.

"If all our followers could click the link, read Jamie's story, and, if able, give a donation, that would be very much appreciated."
