Melvin Tay is set to conduct the Westmorland Orchestra in an 'exciting evening' of music.

It is hoped to be third times the charm for Mr Tay, who was first due to conduct the orchestra in 2020, the year Covid-19 took hold.

A further scheduled appearance in December was cancelled due to snow.

Mr Tay was appointed as permanent music director and conductor of the orchestra in January.

The curtain-raising piece for the evening, on March 23, is The King Lear Overture by Berlioz, a composition described as being 'more lively' than what might be expected from Shakespeare's tragedy.

The ensemble will be joined by French horn player Angela Barnes.

Normally playing for the London Symphony Orchestra, Ms Barnes returns to her roots in the North West of England for this performance.

She will be playing Strauss' Second Horn Concerto.

This is a piece she has previously performed during the final of the BBC's Young Musician of The Year contest.

Ms Barnes said: "I’m enjoying having the opportunity to rediscover why I fell in love with this wonderful piece all those years ago, and it brings back many happy memories!"

The finale arrives with Vaughan William's 'London' Symphony.

The spring concert starts at 7.30pm at Kendal Leisure Centre.

Tickets, priced at £15, are free for under 19s and full-time students.

They can be procured online or on the door.
