A KENDAL care home put on a special party for a devoted couple celebrating their 67th wedding anniversary.

Sheila and Derek Colquhoun got married on March 13 1957 at the age of 21 and 26.

They first met in Leeds while working in a shoe shop where Derek was the manager.

Their move to Cumbria happened in the early 70s when Mrs Colquhoun got a job as a matron at Heversham Boys Grammar School. Mr Colquhoun would then become a manager at K Shoes in the advertising department.

The pair lived in Milnthorpe where Mrs Colquhoun ran the local youth club, and Kendal, where she was the manager of Webster's Yard. They are currently both residents at Kendal Care Home on Burton Road.

At the age of 93 and 88, their love is still going strong and they celebrated their anniversary with a special celebration in their care home.

The staff prepared an anniversary party with cakes and drinks with their friends attending.

Sheila and Derek have four children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

When asked about what kept their marriage strong and lasting, one of their two daughters Jill Bardgett said: "They always supported each other and they were always very caring. They would say that you work on a marriage and you give each other time and I think that is probably what they did for each other.

"They did a lot of things together. After they retired they travelled a lot. They went on holidays when they could manage to. My eldest brother lives in South Africa so they would visit him and spend a lot of time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren - family has always been an important thing for them.

"They would always be doing things for other people - they were generous and kind."
