A MOTHER has received a year's worth of nappies after a midwife doing her shopping at ALDI spotted her giving birth by the side of the A590.

Postwoman Jane Martin, 33, was booked to give birth at Helme Chase in Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal but the maternity unit closed for maintenance work at another part of the hospital.

She decided to give birth at Furness General in Barrow but her 90-minute labour meant that Jane and her husband Aiden did not have enough time to get there as they were driving on the A590.

They were told by the midwives to pull over at the Blue Light Hub in Ulverson but there were no ambulances when they arrived. As Aiden started delivering the baby, midwife Sarah Hamilton came rushing over.

Jane, who lives in Kendal and works in Coniston, said: "There was no-one there, no ambulance there, and then a midwife, she came running out of Aldi - she'd just popped in to get some yoghurt - she ran across the car park.

"I don't think she realised I was in labour, I think she just thought that she was a nurse, and could help with whatever.

"She came over and realised I was in labour and she helped to deliver my baby."

With Sarah's help, they successfully delivered baby Audra, who weighed nine pounds and two ounces.

Other than needing to be warmed up due to it being a cold day, Audra was healthy.

The mum-of-three said: "I wasn't scared. I have done it, luckily, before so I knew where I was in the process and what was going to happen, it's not like it was my first child."

After finding out about this story, the supermarket chain Aldi donated a year's supply of nappies to the mother.

"It's amazing," she said. "I wasn't expecting any of this so I'm absolutely over the moon, I have got other children in nappies so this is so lovely."
