A south Lakeland town celebrated St George's Day this weekend in its own unique way.

Ulverston saw the return of its iconic St George's Day pageant on Saturday, April 20, presenting a tongue-in-cheek re-enactment of the hero saving his damsel in distress.

Using a motorbike as a steed, 'St George' - played by Tim Balchin - battled the hungry dragon (Karl Scrogham) to the delight of shoppers making their way through Market Square.

The sight of a man wrestling a dragon to the ground is not one that happens very often in Ulverston, but is designed to add 'colour' to the town according to one of the stars of the show.

He was also made to fight through a horde of the dragon's accomplices before finally being able to rescue his love, a starring role for Lizzie Grieves.

The pair got the happy ending they dreamed of, eventually riding off into the sunset, the motorbike roaring as the defeated dragon had once done.

The spectacle has grown to be a key attraction for Ulverston, encouraging more people to visit the town, as well as highlighting the historic roots that have shaped the area.

The likes of Bob Needham, one of the main performers, have taken part in the pageant since its inception in the early 2000s.

Those visiting Ulverston on Saturday were treated to two re-enactments either side of brass band performances.
