THE family of a well-known solicitor have paid tribute to her compassion, drive and zest for life, saying her love for family, friends and community 'shone through in everything she did'.
Zoe Calway, who was head of Cartmell Shepherd Solicitors’ Penrith office, died at Eden Valley Hospice in Carlisle on Monday, May 13, aged 50.
Zoe’s husband, David, said she touched the lives of many people through her 'fabulous personality, sense of fun and unstoppable determination to make a difference'.
He said: “Zoe was an inspiration to everyone around her, through her compassion, drive and humour, and her wonderful and kind nature.
“It’s hard to acknowledge that someone so full of life could be lost to cancer so quickly, and we now face the seemingly impossible challenge of facing life without her.
“Zoe loved life and brought so much joy. We will hold tight to our memories of wonderful times with Zoe and feel lucky to be surrounded by so many who can speak with passion about her part in their lives.”
Over the years, Zoe raised thousands of pounds for charity through cycling, running and walking challenges. A long-standing supporter of Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland, she cycled the Coast-to-Coast route and ran the Great North Run to raise funds for the charity.
She enjoyed training towards a challenge, finishing her first marathon in 2020 - running on her own due to Covid restrictions - and achieving a long-held ambition to complete The Lakesman (half) triathlon last year.
Zoe’s family are planning a series of fundraising events in her memory to raise money for Eden Valley Hospice, where she spent her final days surrounded by family and friends.
Zoe was a director at Cartmell Shepherd, joining the legal firm in 2003 and qualifying as a solicitor in 2006. Based at the Penrith office, she was part of the legal firm’s Wills, Probate and Inheritance team.

Zoe lived near Penrith with David and their two children.
She was actively involved in community activities in her local area including being a governor at Lowther Endowed School.
