A TRAIN station is now funded to have step-free access between platforms.

Simon Fell MP for Barrow in Furness announced that Ulverston Station's Access for All (AfA) bid has been 'successful'.

The Department for Transport has awarded the cash from the latest round of the Access for All programme.

Fifty stations were chosen from a submitted list of 310 stations and evaluated against several factors, including passenger use, rail priorities, local factors and location, and the support of the local MP.

Ulverston was one of the chosen stations and is now set to have step-free access between platforms.

"No more lugging bikes and bags up and down two flights of stairs," said Mr Fell.

"And for those with accessibility issues, they won’t have to ask a member of staff to open up the barrow crossing and walk them across the tracks.

"This is a massive win."

The AfA programme was launched in 2006 to address the issues faced by disabled passengers and passengers facing mobility restraints when using railway stations in England, Scotland and Wales.

Other stations to receive funding in the North West include Bredbury, Aigburth and Church and Oswaldtwistle.

Mr Fell added: "I have lobbied two rail ministers on this (including bringing one to Ulverston Station), raised it on the floor of the House, and campaigned for years. But this was a team effort.

"Huge thanks to Huw Merriman, Northern, the tireless Anthony Jennings, Furness CRP, and my colleague Tim Farron for all your support with this."
