Make the most of summer days with the award-winning Langdale Chase in Windermere. From one-night spa breaks to sizzling summer-inspired dining with friends, it’s time to get out and enjoy the change of season.

Al Fresco dining

Created by renowned garden designer Thomas Mawson, The Terrace offers unspoiled views over his famed garden and towards the Langdale fells.

Whilst dining outside, take a moment to witness the gardens returning to their former glory and gaze across Windermere; see yachts gliding on the glistening waters, and wave at lake cruises ferrying passengers from Bowness to Ambleside and back.

Eventually, eyes will be drawn to the majestic Lakeland fells on the horizon. From the left, the Coniston fells act as a barrier, protecting the Southern Lake District from the Irish Sea’s worst. Follow the ridgeline to the right to discover the Langdale Pikes, one of the most iconic mountainscapes in the UK.

Swallows and Amazons Afternoon Tea

(Image: Daniel Thwaites)

In the peaceful splendour of the Dining Room or out on the terrace, this most celebrated of British traditions is a highlight of any stay. Just like Edna Howarth, the chatelaine of Langdale Chase in the 1890’s, this is a daily ritual –  traditional savouries, scones and delicious fancies are freshly made by our pastry chefs every morning. The finest Cumbrian clotted cream and Scottish strawberry jams provide the ultimate treat, particularly when a glass of champagne is on hand too!

Langdale Chase’s latest afternoon tea is inspired by the beautiful landscape that surrounds the hotel. Featuring Titty’s marmalade tea loaf, quintessential Pemican beef, horseradish, red onion sandwiches, potted shrimps and lobster rolls, guests are invited to enjoy a culinary journey of adventure through the tale of Arthur Ransome’s Swallows and Amazons.

The Swallows and Amazons afternoon tea is £55 per person and available daily from 12pm to 4pm. The full menu can be found here*.

*Subject to availability. Ingredients may vary. Afternoon tea is served in the Dining Room and weather permitting, on the terraces and in the gardens. Bookings must be made at least 24 hours in advance.

Each room at Langdale Chase is decorated to accentuate the building’s original features. Seven spacious suites boast individual details such as cosy reading nooks overlooking the lake, while one has a stained-glass ceiling. Two rooms even feature secret wardrobe bathroom doors. Schools out, summer plans are in. For those searching for an adventure in the Lake District, Langdale Chase provides the perfect backdrop for it all. The historic hotel boasts inter-connecting family suites, and each child is treated to their very own bathrobe and slippers before enjoying cookies and milk before bed. In the restaurant, young diners will also find a delicious menu filled with a selection of family-favourites.

Dog-friendly rooms

Don’t be in the dog house! As dog lovers, the team at Langdale Chase take care of their canine companions from the moment they check-in to the moment they ‘wag’ their tail goodbye. The hotel has a selection of dog-friendly, ground floor rooms* which offer direct access to the beautiful gardens.

Dogs are welcome in all areas of the hotel apart from the Dining Room, and they may even find the hotel’s resident dog, Eddie, roaming around.

*There is a £30 charge per dog.

Things to do this summer

In close proximity to many popular activities in the local area, the hotel’s partnership with a Cumbrian-based adventure specialist also offers a range of exciting experiences. Lovers of the outdoors can enjoy 4x4 off-road driving and clay pigeon shooting, as well as lakeside activities including paddleboarding, wild swimming, boating and kayaking. The hotel kitchen will also make up picnic baskets for guests to enjoy while hiking popular walking routes, with Langdale Chase offering a drop off and pick up service.

Those who prefer to stay indoors and relax will enjoy wine tastings led by certified sommelier, Julien Hennebelle, or a screening in the hotel’s cinema room, which shows three classic films per day, alongside complementary bento boxes and ice cream - bookable also for private screenings. Cosy activity seekers can snuggle up by one of four original fireplaces in the new reading room or various lounges.
