Peace campaigners were busy collecting signatures in Kendal on Saturday (January 18, 2025) to urge MPs to help create a permanent peace in Palestine and Israel.
Members of South Lakeland and Lancaster District Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) are calling on all Cumbrian MPs, including Tim Farron and Lizzi Collinge, to do more to persuade the UK Government to take action.
In particular, they are calling for an end to the supply of arms and arms components from the UK to Israel, a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, recognition of the Palestinian state and actions to stop Israel’s war crimes.

The Kendal campaigners welcomed both the prospect of a promised pause in Israel's attacks on Gaza and the release of hostages by Hamas, but highlighted the fact that many children had again been killed in Israeli airstrikes which continued for days after the ceasefire agreement was announced.
"In the past 15 months, thousands of children in Gaza have been killed and tens of thousands more have been injured or orphaned, while the entire population now faces famine and disease.

"Hence, however welcome a temporary pause in Israel's attacks on Gaza may be, it is clearly not enough.
"Gaza needs much more and we need our politicians to do much more.
"They could start by publicly condemning the continued killing of innocent children and Netanyahu's long resistance to a deal which would have released the hostages much sooner, and by joining calls for an end to the complicity of the UK Government and of UK companies in supplying weapons and weapons components to Israel."
