An improvement notice has been served on Sellafield Ltd after a shunting accident at the Cumbria site.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) issued the notice after a railway wagon, not properly secured, rolled 60 metres and collided with a stationary wagon.

The incident, which happened during shunting activities in November 2024, could have had serious consequences for workers, according to the regulator.

However, no workers were injured.

The collision left both wagons with minor damage, but neither was derailed.

The nuclear waste containers remained intact, and there was no radiation risk to workers or the public.

Ian Bramwell, the ONR’s head of regulation for Sellafield operations, said: "This improvement notice will require Sellafield Ltd to put in place the appropriate health and safety arrangements to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

"This will include improving how Sellafield plan, organise, monitor and review the measures in place to protect personnel directly and indirectly involved in rail activities on the site."

Sellafield Ltd has until June 13, 2025, to comply with the notice.

Further inspections by the ONR will be conducted in March and April to review progress.

The notice was given under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
