Joseph Coelho, the 2024 Carnegie Medal winner, is set to headline a prestigious book event in Sedbergh today.
The announcement of the 2025 Carnegie Medals shortlist will be celebrated live at Carnegies Book Town Takeover, at Sedbergh School, with the attendance of several authors and illustrators.
This marks the second time these talents have travelled to Sedbergh to engage with children from Sedbergh, Dent, and Garsdale.
Other regional schools are also set to join the event.
The Carnegie Medal for Writing is an annual award given to a children's book that provides an 'outstanding' reading experience.
Past winners include C.S. Lewis, Phillip Pullman, Sally Gardner, and Terry Pratchett.
The award was established in 1936 in memory of Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-born philanthropist who amassed a fortune in the steel industry in the USA.
Having benefited from a library as a child, Carnegie vowed to use his wealth to establish free libraries.
He founded more than 2,800 libraries across the English-speaking world.
The first winner of the award was Arthur Ransome for "Pigeon Post".
Winners receive a gold medal and the £5,000 Colin Mears Award, a bequest from the Worthing-based accountant and children's book collector.
The Carnegie Medal for Illustration is the only UK prize that exclusively honours illustration in children's books.
Awarded annually, the medal aims to recognise an illustrator whose work creates an 'outstanding' reading experience.
In addition to the medal celebrations, Sedbergh Booktown will announce the winners of its first annual writing competition.
The competition had three categories: junior, senior students, and adults.
The theme was "An Extraordinary Journey".
Sedbergh's Westwood Books funded the prizes, and the Lookaround parish magazine will publish the winning stories monthly.
The next writing competition will be announced at the end of August.
