A Lake District hotel manager has called on residents to apply for jobs.
Gary Wilson, general manager at the Inn on the Lake, has worked in the hospitality industry for more than 25 years.
He has seen the industry go through many changes, from "booming summers," Brexit, and recessions, to the Covid-19 pandemic.
But one thing, he says, has never changed -the value of a good first job.
As the Inn on the Lake continues to recruit for weekend and holiday shifts, Mr Wilson is calling on residents, especially students, career starters, and those returning to work, to consider taking a first step into the hospitality industry.
Mr Wilson said: "Over the years, I've watched young people come through our doors nervous on day one and leave years later with skills, confidence, and careers.
"It's one of the most rewarding parts of this job—seeing someone find their feet and grow into themselves."
Despite national staffing shortages in hospitality, applications for weekend and seasonal roles have slowed, a change Mr Wilson and his team have seen post-pandemic.
The Inn on the Lake is now looking to reconnect with its community and encourage people to rediscover the benefits of part-time work in the sector.
Mr Wilson said: "There used to be a real culture of weekend jobs in hospitality—it was where you learned to work hard, communicate, and be part of a team.
"That's still true, and we'd love to see more locals, especially young people, take advantage of what's right here on their doorstep."
The Inn on the Lake is currently offering flexible Saturday and Sunday shifts (4–8 hours per day), with extra hours during school holidays.
