MORE than 850 people, making up over 200 teams, took on a physical challenge in the hills above Grasmere today, tackling sun, wind and treacherous terrain, and pushing themselves to the limits in aid of veteran’s charity, Walking With The Wounded.

The teams faced three different routes, from 14km with 761m ascent through to the most challenging at 27km and 1,411m ascent, with the first heading out at 7am this morning.

The first finishers completed the longest route in just four hours.

The Cumbrian Challenge, now in its 13th year, is the headline fundraising event for Walking With The Wounded, and this year has so far raised more than £400,000.

Teams come from around the country, and some even come from abroad to take part, taking over the Grasmere showground for the weekend.

Some take the challenge very seriously, training for months beforehand, others take part in fancy dress. This year the participants included two wizards and one person in a suit of armour.

James Davis, head of events & partnerships with Walking With The Wounded, said: “This was an incredible weekend, such a buzz.

"We are indebted to the villagers in Grasmere who welcome us to this stunning part of the country.

"Each and every member of the teams taking part has gone above and beyond in their efforts to raise money for those who served; and their contributions, and the difference that makes to veterans, will last long after the aches and pains of the challenge have faded.

"Everyone taking part in the Cumbrian Challenge should be very proud of their efforts.”

Walking with the Wounded offers personalised employment support, mental health and well-being support, and support care coordination to help veterans who are struggling after military service.
