Consultation has begun on a planning application for the redevelopment of a town centre café.

Westmorland and Furness Council are considering the application to change the former Union Jack café into a two-bedroom apartment following the café’s closure in April.

The planning application proposes a change of use for the site at 15 Kirkland from a Class E premises to a Class C3.

The redevelopment would include the removal of a glazed screen and door to the front of the building, and alterations the rear changing the door to a window.

The two-bedroom accommodation would include a kitchen, combined dining and sitting area, a small amenity space and two rented car parking spaces.

The ground floor property has been in the family’s ownership since 1949, running it as a café until 2007. After this, the business was leased to others, most recently opened under the management of Debbie Evans and her partner Paul Bott in July 2023.

The application was filed by Mr & Mrs Trimmingham on May 2, with consultation now under way and due to come to an end on July 3.

The property is on the northern edge of the Kendal Conservation Area, though planning proposals outline how the changes would restore the building to its former character:

“15 Kirkland is one of the buildings which fronts onto the main road and forms part of the ‘narrow frontages to the narrow and winding street’.

“The building forms part of the overall street scene and therefore is a significant asset to the character of the area.”

The redevelopment would restore the front elevation to its original frontage, featuring traditional painted timber sash windows,

The bottom section of the building will be re-rendered, while the sash windows will be double glazed to reduce road noise and improve insulation. The ground floor windows will be painted timber, double glazed to reduce road noise and improve insulation.
