A Cumbrian school has appealed for help raising money to build a new learning space for their pupils.

Grange CofE Primary School are hoping to create an outdoor learning space and garden room in the grounds of the school to provide space for additional support for students, particularly those with special educational needs or mental health challenges.

The campaign was launched by the school’s PTA, known as Friends of Grange School (FroGS) which arranges fundraising events in and out of school.

Head of the PTA Leah Deverill said: “Some children with additional needs require a withdrawal space that they can retreat to when things get overwhelming.

"For this to be effective, it requires a space to do this. Currently, this is an issue for us - we are severely lacking in spaces to do the necessary 1:1 and small group intervention work.

“We have a lovely library space, but this is also used for weekly music lessons as well as any meetings with external professionals as and when.

"To try and solve this problem we have been looking at adding a garden room type space in the school grounds.

"This would provide additional learning space for group work to take place. It can also be used as a base for outdoor learning.”

FroGS has organised a variety of events to raise money for the outdoor learning space, including a summer fair, silly hair day, cross bay walk, raffles and parents social events, with just under £10,000 raised so far.

The planned garden room is set to be 5m x 3m, highly insulated with a concrete base, with an estimated cost of £23,435.

Ms Deverill said: “We’re a long way from our £25,000 target, so we’d like to ask people, if you’re able to help, please send donations directly to the school or contact us for more information on 015395 32392, or email admin@grange.cumbria.sch.uk
