A new stair lift will be installed in Hawkshead Market Hall next month to help improve access for the whole community.

The lift is the result of a project funded jointly by the Hawkshead Market Hall and the Masonic Lodge in a bid to bring communities together - with support from the Lake District National Park Association.

The historic building on the Square in Hawkshead dates back to 1790 and is managed by a registered charity, the Hawkshead Market Hall Trust.

Market Hall secretary Amal Loring said: "This project has been a real team effort and will have a far wider reach than just a stair lift being installed.

“It means that those who were once excluded from visiting the many activities held in the upper market hall can now be included, which adds to the overall wellbeing of the elderly and disabled community.”

It’s hoped the new stair lift will help to tackle loneliness in local population, and reach parts of the community that have so far been neglected, including residents with special needs.

The Market Hall has also been officially listed as an emergency hub, providing a space that can support people in the event of an emergency such as severe weather or power outages.
