Staveley theatre performers replicate first show from 1954

The Staveley Amateur Operatic Society will be performing The Mikado at Staveley Village Hall between Wednesday, September 10 and Saturday, September 13.

A spokesperson from the SAOS said: "As one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s best known operettas, Staveley have performed it many times over the years.

"But 71 years later, we are bringing the black and white version of this classic show back to the stage at Staveley Village Hall."

The upcoming production next month will hark back to the very first time the SAOS took to the stage, back in 1954.

'The Mikado' is a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta set in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu.

The spokesperson explained: "It tells the story of Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado (or Emperor), who disguises himself as a wandering minstrel to avoid an unwanted marriage and pursue his love, Yum-Yum.

"Yum-Yum is betrothed to Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner, who was recently reprieved from execution for flirting.

"The Mikado threatens to abolish the office of Lord High Executioner if an execution doesn't take place soon."

"To avoid execution himself, Ko-Ko proposes a deal: Nanki-Poo can marry Yum-Yum for a month, after which he will be executed.

"The plot thickens with the arrival of Katisha, who also desires Nanki-Poo, and the revelation of Nanki-Poo's true identity, leading to a series of comedic and convoluted situations before a happy ending is achieved.

"This fun and hilarious show retains all the brilliant music and words of Gilbert and Sullivan’s original score and will be a great evening out for all the family."

The 'black and white' Mikado is set in a stylised, monochrome world 'inspired by the Marx Brothers and British variety shows of the 1920s and 30s'.

Rather than aiming for an accurate Japanese setting, it uses the opera as a platform to satirise English society.
