Revealed: Cumbria's most and least deprived neighbourhoods

The Geographic Data Service has compiled a dataset measuring the level of deprivation across the country and visualised the data on a map.

Using a country-wide index of deprivation from 2019, the map shows Barrow as south Cumbria’s most deprived town and Arnside as the least.

The map uses a coloured coordinated system. Each area is put into one of ten groups, or “deciles”.

Each decile is given a colour that ranges from dark red to dark blue based on the area’s deprivation.

Dark red is used for the most deprived areas and dark blue is used for the least deprived areas.

The factors used to measure the relative measure of deprivation change between each data set.

Recurring characteristics are income, employment, crime, education and quality of life.

Barrow's most and least deprived areas (Image: Geographic Data Service, GeoDS.ac.uk)In Barrow, the area with the most deprivation is between Salthouse Road and Anson Street, which is entirely dark red.

Yarlside is the town’s least deprived area, with Croslands Park, Beacon Hill and Hawcoat following.

Kendal's most and least deprived areas (Image: Geographic Data Service, GeoDS.ac.uk) In Kendal, Sandylands and Kirkbarrow are both orange while the area between Aikrigg and Heron Hill is dark blue.

Windermere and Bowness' most and least deprived areas(Image: Geographic Data Service, GeoDS.ac.uk)For Windermere and Bowness, almost the entire area is light blue with a dark blue centre around Lake Road.

Ulverston 's most and least deprived areas (Image: Geographic Data Service, GeoDS.ac.uk)In Ulverston, orange areas stretch from Canal Foot to Dragley Beck. The town’s least deprived areas are on the immediate west of Springfield Road.

Dalton's most and least deprived areas (Image: Geographic Data Service, GeoDS.ac.uk)The most deprived areas in Dalton are between Ulverston Road and Broughton Road. The least are centred around Stainton Drive in the south.

Arnside's most and least deprived areas (Image: Geographic Data Service, GeoDS.ac.uk)Most of Arnside is dark blue. The only other colour in the town is light blue, which is concentrated on Silverdale Road and The Promenade.
