A horse has died and two spectators were taken to hospital following a tragic incident during Cartmel Racecourse’s Bank Holiday meeting.

The racecourse confirmed that the horse Wbee collapsed during the third race on Monday after suffering a sudden heart-related condition. The incident happened as the runners approached the second-last hurdle.

A statement from track bosses confirmed that on-site medical teams acted within moments, providing care both to the spectators and to the horse involved. Despite their efforts, Wbee could not be saved.

Two members of the public were transported to hospital for further treatment. Racecourse officials say they are continuing to check on their condition, while also stressing the importance of protecting the privacy of those involved.

In a statement, Cartmel Racecourse said: "Cartmel Racecourse can confirm that during the third race of our Bank Holiday meeting, the horse Wbee suffered a sudden heart-related condition immediately prior to the second-last hurdle and collapsed whilst racing.

"This veterinary event, confirmed by the treating veterinary team, caused the horse to deviate from the course, where it came into contact with a group of spectators.

"On-site medical teams responded immediately and two people were taken to hospital for further treatment. Course officials remain in regular contact with the relevant authorities regarding their condition, while ensuring their privacy.

"The attending senior racecourse vet was in attendance in a matter of seconds but sadly the horse Wbee passed away as he arrived."

The event is one of the biggest fixtures in Cartmel’s racing calendar, attracting thousands of visitors to the picturesque Cumbrian course across the Bank Holiday weekend.

Heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury was also present at the meeting, where his horse Big Gypsy King had been entered to run earlier in the day. It has not been confirmed whether the Morecambe-based fighter witnessed the incident.

The accident left a sombre atmosphere at the course, with tributes paid to Wbee and concern expressed for the spectators taken to hospital.
