Located on the fringes of the Lake District, Westmorland County Show – taking place this year on Wednesday, September 10 and Thursday, September 11 – is a fantastic day out, voted as one of the UK’s favourite shows and enjoyed by over 37,000 visitors every year.
A major livestock show with classes for cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and alpacas, heavy and light horses too, there’s plenty to see.
Visitors can meet the foxhounds, get up close to magnificent cattle, marvel at the show jumping, discover the interactive displays in the Learning for Life marquee, get inspired by the WI’s crafty creations, or cheer on their favourites in the Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling.
There's also the chance to stock up on artisan chocolates, cheeses, pies, gins and much more in the North West’s largest local food hall.
A spokesperson said: "With the chance to discover the best of farming and the countryside, as well as seeing some of the country’s top quality livestock, shop till you drop amongst hundreds of trade stands or get involved with our rural craft have-a-go areas, you’ll be spoilt for choice at this year’s show."
The show raises funds for the Westmorland County Agricultural Society to help support farming and the countryside.
Headlining in the food theatre this year will be celebrity chefs Phil Vickery and Rosemary Shrager. Lorraine Stanton, who runs it, said: "The exciting thing is they will both be together at the show on Wednesday 10th. We never have had that opportunity, but as the manager and organiser of the food theatre I pushed for this and booked them. They are very excited, as are we. Rosemary will demo 11am and 2pm on Wednesday and Phil will be judging the pigs and some non-agricultural stands.
"Phil has been a pig farmer for 18 years and has only recently given it up due to many more TV work commitments. So he is experienced to be able to judge these fine animals and is looking forward to seeing them.
"Phil also had a great Cumbrian work background and is a favourite to the show, after working at Michaels Nook in Grasmere in the mid '80s. He has championed Cumbria for years."
Phil's demonstrations will take place on Thursday at 11am and 2pm on the theme of ‘A Taste of his Travels', as he has visited more than 60 countries with ITV's This Morning and wants to show that by using some local ingredients, his dishes can be adapted to get Mediterranean or worldwide flavours.
Lorraine said: "Rosemary is currently fresh from doing a huge 450-mile cycle ride on electric bikes from Land's End to Dover, to raise money for food poverty charities. No bikes, she’ll be driving to us!
"Rosemary is such a fabulous fun character and will no doubt win the hearts of the audience, entertain us and educate us on how to make things in our own kitchen."
