A historic Lake District pub in Hawkshead has reopened to the public following a major renovation.
The King’s Arms in Hawkshead, a former coaching inn, welcomed customers once again last Friday (August 29) after extensive refurbishment.
Led by owner Jo McGowan and a team of Cumbrian tradespeople, the renovation aimed to preserve the building’s heritage while creating a warm, accessible environment for both locals and visitors.

"We wanted to create a place that truly belongs to the community, a welcoming space where people can come together, relax, and celebrate what makes Hawkshead and the Lake District so special."
Original features such as oak beams, stone fireplaces, and slate floors have been carefully retained.

The reopening also marked a renewed focus on Cumbrian food and drink.
The pub’s new menu features traditional dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients from nearby farmers, butchers, brewers, and dairies.
Guests can expect pub classics and seasonal specials, alongside a curated selection of local ales, wines, and craft spirits.
Head Chef Ross Bowman (Image: Supplied) The King’s Arms also offers eight en-suite bedrooms, each individually designed to blend traditional character with modern comfort.
These rooms provide a convenient and welcoming base for those exploring the Lake District or simply seeking a peaceful getaway.
Ms McGowan said: "Whether you’re dropping in for a pint, enjoying a hearty meal, or booking a stay, The King’s Arms promises a welcoming, authentic Lakeland experience where history, craftsmanship, and hospitality come together seamlessly."
