Rory Stewart is set to return to Cumbria later this month to talk at an event which celebrates the release of his new book.
The former Cumbrian MP, famous podcaster, and bestselling author will take to Westmorland Hall, Kendal Leisure Centre, on October 28, at 7pm, to talk with local farmer and fellow author, James Rebanks.
They’ll be discussing Stewart’s new book, Middleland: Dispatches from the Borders, published by Jonathan Cape, which examines the country rurally today.
The book is described as an “unforgettable portrait of rural Britain today – a place caught in tensions between farming and the natural world, between the need to preserve and to grow, between local and national politics – as well as a timeless evocation of the history, people and landscape of Cumbria.”
The event is being hosted by Grasmere’s famous independent Sam Read Bookseller.
Tickets are priced at £11 per person, but those choosing to attend have the chance to get a signed copy of Steward’s new book two days ahead of its release.
Will Smith, co-owner of Sam Read Bookseller, highlighted what a great opportunity it was to see two ‘cheerleaders for Cumbria’.
He continued: “Rory’s book promises a unique perspective on Cumbria, reflecting on the uplifting stories he found here whilst representing the county at Westminster.
“We’re looking forward to a lively conversation filled with humour, political insights, and deep reflections on Cumbria’s place in the world today.”
Stewart is the former Member of Parliament for Penrith and the Border, a constituency he represented from 2010 to 2019. He also ran for the Conservative party leadership in 2019; a contest Boris Johnson went onto win.
He’s written a host of books about his travels around the world, and more recently, his memoir about his time in Westminster, Politics on the Edge, was greeted with great acclaim nationally.
He now works as an academic and is the co-host of the well-known podcast, The Rest is Politics, with Alastair Campbell.
