A product made in the Lake District described as a 'taste sensation' has scooped a top prize in a national food competition.

Brinjal Aubergine Pickle, made by Hawkshead Relish, took gold in the condiments category at the Great British Food Awards 2025.

The pickle is described as a spiced aubergine pickle with a warming kick suitable for pairing with curry, fish, or cheese on toast.

The product was praised by Holly Shackleton, editor of Great British Food Magazine and lead judge.

Ms Shackleton said: "Incredible flavour that continues to unfold long after the first taste.

"Complex and perfectly balanced, it is at once sweet and savoury, spicy and aromatic with black pepper.

"An absolute taste sensation.

"The texture is equally multi-dimensional without being impractical.

"This would transform even the simplest Indian dishes into a moreish feast."

The company also picked up a silver award in the table sauce category for its Kimchi Ketchup, launched in 2025.

Kimchi Ketchup offers the flavour of kimchi in a bold, unfermented sauce.

Maria Whitehead MBE, co-founder of Hawkshead Relish, said: "We are thrilled to receive both a Gold and Silver award for our products at the Great British Food Awards.

"Being recognised nationally alongside some of Britain’s finest food producers is a real achievement for the entire team, and we’re incredibly proud."

The Great British Food Awards, established in 2014, celebrate the UK’s best artisanal food and drink producers.

This year’s judging panel included leading culinary figures such as Simon Rogan, Sally Abé, Nina Matsunaga, Dan McGeorge, Vivek Singh and Seema Pankhania.

The awards cover a wide range of categories, from flavoured gins to fine cheeses.
