A major road operator is hosting public drop-in sessions in multiple Cumbrian locations this week ahead of next month’s significant M6 road closures between Junctions 39 and 40.
National Highways North West has arranged public information sessions about the work being conducted by Network Rail on the M6’s Clifton Bridge in January 2026.
Demolition and replacement work on the bridge will take place from January 2 to 5 and again from January 9 and 12, between 8 pm and 5 am.
This will occur between Shap’s J39 and Penrith’s J40 on the M6, and the motorway will be completely closed in both directions on the specified dates because of the work.
A diversion route for motorists via the A66 will be signposted, it is understood.
However, due to the significant nature of the work, National Highways North West has named four Cumbrian locations that will this week host drop-in information sessions on the traffic disruption.
These will take place at: Rheged Centre, Penrith, from today until tomorrow, between 9.30 am and 5 pm; Tebay Methodist Church, on Wednesday, December 10, between 10 am and 7 pm; Kirkby Stephen Methodist Church, on Thursday, December 11, between 10 am and 7 pm; and the engagement van, Brewery Lane, Penrith, on Saturday, December 13, between 9 am and 4 pm.
The road operator said: “Pop along whatever time suits you best.
“We look forward to seeing you there.”
