Tim Farron has called Reform UK’s new Christian fellowship, which is set to launch today, according to reports, ‘a good thing’.
The Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale made the comments in a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday (December 8).
The former Lib Dem leader was reacting to the news that the conservative political commentator Tim Montgomerie looks set to be the Honorary President of the new Reform Christian Fellowship, according to reports by the website Guido Fawkes.
Taking to X, Mr Farron wrote: “This is a good thing.
“Labour, Lib Dems, and Conservatives all have their own Christian fellowships.
“You can share a faith and come to different political conclusions.
“Though if we’re Christians, we need to remember that politics cannot save us, it is important but not ultimate.”
According to the Guido Fawkes article published online, Reform’s Christian Fellowship has its aim in operating as a ‘bridge’ between church goers and politics.
Additionally, the report suggested that the fellowship will launch today, and that David Bull, Reform’s party chairman, alongside Sarah Pochin MP, will attend a London Christmas carol concert to mark its first major event.
Tim Montgomerie, the man who is set to be made the new fellowships Honorary President, was previously part of the Conservative Christian Fellowship, which he co-founded in 1990.
Montgomerie, the founder of Conservative Home, made headlines late last year when he left the Conservative Party after over 30 years to join Reform UK.
In addition to Mr Farron’s comments on Reform UK Christian Fellowship, the Westmorland MP this week spoke to Danny Kruger MP on his Christian political podcast, ‘A Mucky Business’.
Within the episode of the podcast, Mr Farron asked Mr Kruger about why he chose to defect from the Conservative Party to Reform UK earlier this year.
