Long before Peter Rabbit hopped into the hearts of readers, his creator was already delighting people with her art.
As Christmas creeps closer and closer, enjoy a festive treat and take a peek at Beatrix Potter's handmade Christmas cards.
National Trust Lake District said: "Before Beatrix Potter became famous for her beloved little white books, she created enchanting Christmas cards - and they’re every bit as delightful as her later stories."
The cards date back to the late 19th century when Potter began selling her illustrations for greeting cards and other holiday designs as a way to earn extra income.
These early works helped her develop the whimsical style that would later define her beloved characters.
National Trust Lake District have shared eight of the festive designs with the public.
Beatrix Potter had a special connection to the Lake District.
She drew inspiration from the region’s landscapes, farms, and wildlife – including the iconic Herdwick sheep – for her children’s stories.
Her affection for the area went far beyond storytelling.
She purchased several properties, including Hill Top Farm, to help preserve the landscape she loved.
A successful farmer and conservationist, she left over 4,000 acres and 14 farms to the National Trust.
Today, her former homes such as Hill Top and Lingholm remain popular visitor attractions, offering fans a chance to experience the scenery that inspired her writings.
Potter’s Christmas cards, though less known, reveal the beginnings of the enchanting world she would later create.
