Ambleside Rugby Club asks for players amid lower population

Ambleside Rugby Club, otherwise known as the Centurions, are asking for people to consider joining the team in 2026.

Back in 2023, residents in Ambleside came close to losing their local club before its rebrand to the Centurions and return to competitive action in 2024.

However, a spokesperson outlined that they have 'serious local problems' that are impacting the way it can operate.

They said: "The total number of residents in the village is now down to approximately 1,200.

"The number of holiday homes is now running at 54% and in the next village of Elterwater, it's even higher at 72%.

"We have three local secondary schools who now between them have less than 1,000 pupils between the ages of 11 and 18 - and not one of them now plays full contact rugby by the age of 16 in year 11."

The local university has 'fully engaged' with the club, which has helped to plug gaps in the squad but this was not seen as a full solution.

The spokesperson added: "Basically young people and young families are leaving the areas in droves due to there being no local affordable housing to rent or buy.

"Due to the falling number of rugby players in Cumbria, the number of clubs and teams has fallen dramatically in recent years.

"This means that in Cumbria, for example, we only have one Cumbria rugby union league with a village team like us going up against Carlisle RUFC."

The second half of the season for the Centurions was said to look like the 'toughest nine games of competitive rugby the club has ever had to play'.

The 'cracking little club' is hoping that people considering a move to the area, or locals wanting to give rugby a try, will get in touch with them in the coming weeks.

"We can advise on employment and accommodation opportunities locally - we can help with matchday overnight accommodation so you can enjoy a full weekend in the Lakes," they said.

"We need your help as we are fighting week-in, week-out just to keep this small village rugby club going for another 150 years so we have no choice than to keep fighting and go full Spartan mode to ensure our very existence."
