A Kendal community arts organisation has been the beneficiaries of some famous local community spirit after a burst water pipe forced it to move homes.

Earlier this week, nearly a dozen volunteers helped Ragtag Arts and Community Scrapstore on its first day of moving from its usual home at Mealbank industrial estate to its new temporary home in Elephant Yard, Kendal.

The urgent move was sparked after the Ragtag Arts team returned after their Christmas break to find that a water pipe had burst at their Mealbank café, causing considerable damage.

As a result, the organisation put out an urgent online appeal to find a new home to host its forthcoming events and workshops.

It also subsequently set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to cover the additional costs the burst water pipe has unfortunately caused the organisation.

The team has since found a now home a space in Elephant Yard, but the donation page remains live.

Ragtag Arts took to Facebook to thank all those who had turned out to help them in its hour of need.

It said: “We just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported us today... for our first day of the big move!

“We’ve made a good dent in the move from Mealbank to our new temporary premises in Elephant Yard, Kendal.

“This is what community is all about.”

Since the launch of the GoFundMe page just over a week ago, Ragtag Arts has received 64 individual donations to the sum of £2,117.

Due to the burst water pipe, the organisation has said previously that the Mealbank café’s ceilings, walls, and floors need serious repair.

It also stated that it expects the café and scrapstore to be shut for six months.
