A NEW 'first class' sporting facility could be on the way for the Lake District, with proposals submitted to change the use of a warehouse in a popular garden centre into a facility 'likely for padel or pickleball'.
Plans were submitted to change the storage building at Hayes Garden World, on Lake Road in Ambleside, into an indoor sports facility - which the applicant says would likely be used for either of the popular racquet sports, or alternatively a gym facility.
Documents supporting the application said: "The change of use is required to facilitate the use of the unit for a new first-class indoor sports facility, likely for padel or pickleball.
"Alternatively the building may be used for a gym facility which would fall within the same use class."
The application is said to be 'a positive proposal' which will re-use an existing building and 'provide a high quality sport and recreation facility that will contribute to the health and overall well-being of residents in the Lake District'.
The plans were submitted to the Lake District National Park Authority planning department on February 13 and will now go through a consultation process.
