A Lake District pub has been awarded two major accolades by the AA just six months after it reopened.

The King’s Arms, located on The Square, Hawkshead, reopened in August 2025 after a major renovation.

Jo McGowan, the owner, called the renovation ‘a labour of love’.

Now, the pub, which also has eight en-suite bedrooms for overnight stays, has been awarded Four AA Gold Stars for 2026 and an AA Rosette Award for Culinary Excellence Award.

By being awarded the four gold stars and receiving the AA Rosette for its excellent culinary qualities, the pub has been given vital industry recognition for its high-quality levels of hospitality.

Ms McGowan said: “To be recognised with Four AA Gold Stars and an AA Rosette Award for Culinary Excellence is a tremendous honour for our entire team.

“Our aim has always been to create a place that combines genuine Lakeland hospitality with exceptional food and accommodation.

“These awards are a testament to the dedication, care and passion our team brings every day, from the kitchen and front of house to housekeeping and guest services.

“We’re incredibly proud of our team, and to represent Hawkshead and the Lake District at this level.”

AA inspectors favoured the pub for ‘its balance of traditional charm and contemporary standards, noting the welcoming atmosphere, high quality of accommodation, and the strength of its food’.

Since reopening, the pub has focused heavily on using Cumbrian food and drink but also uses celebrated suppliers from across the north of England.

The menu itself, however, evolves throughout the year, with it often mirroring ‘the changing seasons’.

At Christmas, this newspaper reviewed the dining experience at The King’s Arms, and was blown away by its charming aesthetics, and, amongst other things, its phenomenal deep-fried ice cream – which takes 36 hours to make, according to staff.
