Volunteer mountain rescue teams could face a '£10,000-£20,000' bill in order to cover community events under proposed plans, according to an opposition MP.
Cumbrian MP Tim Farron has warned the costs will make it impossible for crews to attend events such as fell races and agricultural shows.
Under proposed amendments to the Health and Social Care Act, any group providing first aid at an event with a medical professional in the organisation must register with the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
This would require mountain rescue teams to pay 'thousands of pounds' to register, which smaller, volunteer-led organisations would 'struggle to afford'.
Mr Farron, the Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, has written to the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health Innovation and Safety, Dr Zubir Ahmed, and will be tabling an Early Day Motion in Parliament taking place this week to ask for an exemption for small organisations.
Writing to the Minister, Mr Farron said: “If mountain rescue teams have to register with the CQC, it will cost approximately £10,000-£20,000 and will add a significant administrative burden to a small team of hard-working volunteers.
“This is not attainable for any mountain rescue team, and it will likely mean that they will no longer be able to cover these events."
Mountain rescue crews have a tradition of providing medical support for community gatherings, including mountain bike events.
Mr Farron acknowledged the need for regulation but urged the government to protect smaller operations.
He said: “I completely appreciate that these changes are very necessary for larger events.
“However, I am sure you will share my concern about the impact on local events that are supported by mountain rescue teams.
“As a result, I would be massively grateful if you would look into varying the changes to ensure that the unique and essential function of mountain rescue organisations can be protected.”
