Kendal’s Flood Risk Management Scheme has received a Gold Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) 2026 National Site Award.
The award was accepted by Environment Agency contractors, VolkerStevin, who are building the Kendal flood scheme.
Richard Birchall, senior project manager at VolkerStevin, said: "We’re delighted the scheme has won a gold CCS National Site Award.
"It’s the mark of the highest levels of performance in the three areas of the Code of Considerate Practice: Respect the Community, Care for the Environment and Value the Workforce.
"We are making good progress with the scheme at Gooseholme, and our work is due to start on Aynam Road.
"In the last few months works have been completed along New Road and Waterside where glass panels were recently installed as part of the flood defences."
Once finished, the scheme aims to provide improved flood protection for more than 1,920 homes and 2,250 businesses in the area.
The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) aims to raise standards within the construction industry by encouraging companies to work beyond statutory requirements.
It does so by committing those registered with the Scheme to follow their Code of Considerate Practice.
Auditors praised the Kendal scheme for its communication with the community, its environmental contributions, and its partnerships with schools and charities.
Richard Knight, area flood manager at the Environment Agency, said: "This award shows the commitment of the Environment Agency and our contractors to be the most considerate neighbours.
"They recognised the work of the Kendal team in creating value for the Kendal community, and are respectful of the public, the workforce, and the environment."
