A sixth-generation funeral directors in Grange-over-Sands could be at 'severe risk' if a planning application is not approved.

An application has been submitted for a change of use from domestic curtilage to allow for a chapel of rest to be built within the grounds of West Winds on Allithwaite Road for use by Saunders and Sons Funeral Directors.

The business says the new facility is needed because the lease on its existing chapel of rest is due to expire and there are no suitable commercial premises available elsewhere in the town.

A planning statement says: "If the applicant is unable to secure alternative premises, the future of the business, which has served the local community for over 125 years, would be at severe risk."

Plans describe a 3.6m-high, 66 square metre building at a plot that currently houses a cluster of old dog kennels and associated structures that would be demolished.

The building would be used as a purpose-built chapel of rest linked to the existing funeral directors business with a main entrance facing south and a rear service door accessed via an extended driveway and parking area within the property boundary.

West Winds has been the home of the funeral directors since 1979 when it was purchased by Lloyd and Mary Saunders.

A supporting document says that Lloyd's grandson Liam Appleby took over the running of funerals after the Covid-19 pandemic prevented Lloyd from attending funerals.

In the document, Lisa Appleby said: "In November 2024, my husband Liam Appleby and I myself moved to West Winds to maintain the tradition of family life and the business at the 100-year-old home.

"This planning application aims to enable the funeral business to continue to serve the local community with a modern, purpose built chapel of rest facility, with additional space for private parking on our drive within the property boundary for visitors.

"A lot of time and thought has gone into the proposed application to ensure it is discreet, tasteful and will not negatively impact the visual appearance of our home.

"We will not be introducing any signage by way of advertising to the proposed building and we are keen to ensure that our home looks exactly that 'a home'."

The decision on the application is pending with no date set for it to be made.
