While much of the Lake District's attraction is getting outdoors, on its rainier days it can be equally tempting to stay in and admire the views accompanied by a good book.
But somewhere in between on those rainy days, lies the other option - shopping.
Throughout the Lake District's towns and villages you'll find you're rarely without a bookshop to duck into and explore.
TripAdvisor has revealed that the region boasts several well-stocked bookshops with "cosy" atmospheres and "friendly" staff on hand to help you pick your next favourite read - one reviewer was even particularly impressed by a bookshop's loo.
So, here are the top-rated Lake District bookshops on TripAdvisor and why you should visit.
Tabitha Twitchit's Bookshop
Rated among the top shopping experiences in Hawkshead, Tabitha Twitchit's Bookshop has an overall rating of 4.3 over 676 reviews.
The "quirky" building was once The Beatrix Potter Gallery and is named after one of Potter's beloved characters, Tabitha Twitchit, the mother of Tom Kitten.
Run by the National Trust, the shop offers a "curated selection" of second-hand books and regularly hosts events and exhibitions.
One recent reviewer described it as "charming" and "well worth a visit just to soak up the atmosphere."
The New Bookshop and Coffee Shop
Located on Cockermouth's Main Street, The New Bookshop offers a book with a bite, as it includes its very own café in store.
With an overall rating of 4.4 on TripAdvisor, one regular visitor said, "I'm always given the nicest of welcomes and service comes with a smile and a cheery chat.
"The coffee shop is a brilliant addition to the bookshop and is a place frequented by friends, families, and local groups because the food is amazing."
Staff have been described as "friendly" and reviewers have raved about their vegan and gluten-free options.
Fred's Bookshop
The popular independent bookshop in Ambleside has been serving book-lovers since 1956, and offers an ordering-in service as well as home delivery.
Reviewers on TripAdvisor have revelled in its wide selection of titles and one described it as, "the sort of place in which you want to linger."
Another called it "fantastic" and "perfect for a rainy day", praising its children's books area upstairs.
With a wealth of five star reviews, staff were also mentioned as "passionate" and "knowledgeable."
Verey Books
The Pooley Bridge bookstore on the edge of the Lake District is described as a place for "curious minds" and also offers a coffee shop.
With an outstanding overall rating on 4.9, reviewers have said that visitors "won't be disappointed" calling it a "comfy, welcoming place."
One reviewer even raved about the store's toilet, saying, "I think the loo needs a mention too.
"Everything has been thought of it and it made a lasting impression.
"Not bad for a toilet!."
The Ullswater bookshop says it offers "a thoughtfully curated selection" including bestsellers, books by Lakeland greats, practical maps and children's classics, plus cake.
