Across South Cumbria, convalescent homes once played a vital role in recovery and care.

These pictures from the area's convalescent homes are taken from the Sankey Archive, made up of thousands of photos captured by the Sankey family - father and sons Edward, Raymond and Eric.

The Barrow-in-Furness photographers spent decades capturing the "extraordinary and everyday" across Cumbria.

Dating post-1914, this view looks across the lawns towards the grand terrace of the Miners’ Convalescent Home in Grange-over-Sands.

The long frontage features a central porch topped by a large cupola. Above the entrance, the inscription “Erected 1914” is visible.

Built to provide rest and recovery for injured and unwell miners, the home made use of the town’s coastal setting, where sea air was believed to aid conditions such as tuberculosis.
