Morecambe is set to see "history in the making" as work officially begins on the long-awaited Eden Project next week.

A groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Wednesday, June 24, marking the start of construction on the multi-million-pound attraction.

The event will coincide with a 'Eden Community Conversation' at the Winter Gardens, where residents, businesses and community groups will hear updates from the project team and main contractor VINCI Building about the next stages.

Eden Project chief executive Andy Jasper said: "We will host a very special event on June 24.

"The breaking ground ceremony will bring together dignitaries, funders, core stakeholders and the local community on the site to mark the moment before work officially begins.

"It will be like the 'clay pit moment' before construction started at Eden Project Cornwall, which we reflect on a lot.

"The people who stood there on the cusp of transformation in Cornwall were part of something very special.

"And we want to give people in Morecambe that same sense of being part of something important that they can reflect on in years to come.

"History in the making."

A spokesman for Morecambe BID says the Eden Project is "one part of a much wider story unfolding across Morecambe.

They said: "From investment in our seafront and public spaces, to new businesses, events, cultural activity and growing visitor interest, momentum continues to build throughout the town.

"As Eden chief executive Andy Jasper described it, this is Morecambe's 'history in the making' moment.

"For local businesses, residents and visitors alike, the next few years promise to be an exciting journey as Morecambe continues to grow, evolve and attract attention on a national stage."
