MOUNTAIN weather hazards have been issued for the Lake District today as Cumbria braces for Storm Boelo this weekend.
The Met Office has issued the low likelihood mountain weather hazards for the Lake District National Park today, which are relevant to high ground above 300metres.
Hazards include severe wind chill, poor visibility, and exposure to harmful UV from strong sunlight.
A Met Office spokesperson said: "Strong winds can result in a severe and debilitating wind chill many degrees below the actual temperature.
"Without protection, prolonged exposure could result in frost nip or frostbite on exposed parts of the body and/or hypothermia."
"Visibility could be significantly less than 50 metres in all directions with few or no visual references, especially on featureless moors or plateaux.
"Distances become hard to judge and cliff or cornice edges can be difficult to recognise."
"There is a risk of white-out conditions when mist or fog is combined with extensive snow cover."
The Met Office also warned that even on cloudy days, UV exposure at high altitudes could lead to sunburn and eye damage, especially if snow is present and adds to the glare.
Walkers are advised to wear sunblock, long-sleeved clothing, a hat, and high-quality eye protection.
The hazards are expected to remain in place through the weekend as Storm Boleo continues to affect the region.
