A RARE desk thought to be the work of a famous 18th century furniture maker has sold for a record price at Addisons of Barnard Castle.

The George III mahogany pedestal desk – dated circa 1770 – has been attributed to Thomas Chippendale and was sold to a Northern collector for £84,000, breaking the firm’s salesroom record for the highest amount paid for a single item.

Richard Edwards, senior auctioneer and valuer at Addisons described how interest in the item escalated following its posting on the internet.

“We publish an illustrated catalogue in advance of the quarterly sales on our company website, thereby exposing individual items to the international market place,” he said. “In the lead up to the sale, the desk was picked up by a small number of English furniture specialists who now think it might be the work of Thomas Chippendale.”

Addisons currently holds four Fine Art and Antiques Catalogue auctions a year , together with sixteen Antiques, Victoriana and Household Effects sales and two specialist Garden sales.
