MOTORISTS are being warned to take care today (Monday) with heavy snowfall creating hazardous conditions in parts of the South Lakes, north Lancashire and north Yorkshire.
A thick covering of snow on the M6 near Carnforth, has affected traffic flow in the area and, with overnight temperatures set to plummet to –5°C, Lancashire County Council (LCC) Highways division is urging motorists to take care and avoid unnecessary journeys.
In North Yorkshire, a similar warning has been issued.
“These sub-zero temperatures combined with intermittent snowfall mean that salt treatments on the road from the county council’s gritting fleet may well be washed away causing the risk of ice on the roads,” said a spokesperson from North Yorkshire County Council.
“There is a danger of widespread ice on untreated roads, but even on treated roads driving conditions may be difficult. North Yorkshire’s highways officials are therefore advising all drivers on the roads this evening, tonight and tomorrow morning to take particular care and take heed of weather warnings.”
