A GROUP of volunteers took part in a course to learn how to deal with stranded or injured mammals.

The one-day Marine Mammal medic course, run by The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), taught theoretical and practical skills to deal successfully with stranded or injured whales, dolphins or seals - a relatively common event around the region’s coast.

The training means that BDMLR can now call on the trained volunteers to help out with emergencies in the future.

The highlight of the day, which was held at Capernwray Diving Centre, near Carnforth, was a simulated rescue of a seven-metre long, three-tonne inflatable whale.

Volunteers also practised their skills on inflatable dolphins and seals.

Adam Hanlon, of Capernwray Diving, said: “Capernwray is the busiest dive centre in the north of England and it is great that we are able to help organisations like the BDMLR in such a practical way.

“I was a witness to the stranded porpoise at Heysham last summer and will definitley benefit from having training and support from BDMLR.”
