THE number of Christmas cards being trashed this year has been slashed thanks to an eco-friendly scheme which got underway during the festive period.
More than 2,000 electronic greetings cards were sent out across Cumbria, which Resource Cumbria - the waste partnership between the county council and six district councils which is behind the scheme - say has saved two-and-a-half mature trees.
Martin Allman, Cumbria County Council’s waste prevention manager, said: “ To have a final number of more than 2,000 E-cards is a pretty good effort and it shows people are really starting to think about the impact traditional Christmas cards have on the environment. Hopefully each year more and more E-cards are going to be sent.”
Resource Cumbria is hoping to further the initiative and develop non-specific E-cards for birthday and special events.
