THE Lake District National Park Authority has thrown its weight behind a campaign to get Government money set aside for better transport links, saying the Lake District’s 8million visitors need to start thinking “greener”.
The Campaign for National Parks (CNP) has called on the Secretary of State for Transport, Geoff Hoon, to invest £5million in sustainable transport in England’s eight national parks - a move which could cut the volume of traffic that clogs up South Lakeland’s roads each summer, and could lead to improved public transport, cycling tracks and park and ride schemes.
Sustainable transport charity Sustrans is already developing a cycling route which connects Keswick and London, with the Kendal to Windermere and Thirlmere to Keswick stretches already up and running.
