PRIVATE sector managers and professionals are being urged to help the arts and museums in Cumbria to thrive and grow. The call came from Mick Farley, executive director of the Learning and Skills Council in Cumbria, when he addressed a Business in the Arts evening at Hutton-in-the-Forest, near Penrith. “While the arts and museums sector already makes a significant contribution to our economy, it has the potential to do even more to strengthen the county’s competitive position as a leisure and business tourist destination,” said Mr Farley. He believes the sector could make an even bigger contribution to the county’s economy, and says the right skills and knowledge are central to achieving this. “Business in the Arts helps organisations in the sector to develop and grow by matching volunteers from the private sector to organisations needing business support and, at the same time, providing those volunteers with accredited continuing professional development.”
