CUMBRIA County Council's development control and regulation committee and its officers were the fastest out of the 34 English county authorities for determining applications linked with mineral extraction and waste management in 2002/03. The committee settled 80 per cent of its applications in 13 weeks, compared to the Government target of 60 per cent. Cumbria also had the fourth highest number of applications. "Cumbria is usually in the top five, but it is gratifying to be the best," said Coun John Robinson, chairman of the development control and regulation committee.
