A COUPLE who have dedicated their spare time to helping others in the community have been honoured for their efforts.

Bill and Julia Penny, of Ulverston, were presented with an Ulverston Town Council Appreciation Certificate by town mayor Norman Bishop-Rowe for more than 30 years of helping to run the Ulverston Wednesday Club for people with disabilities.

Mr Penny, who became town council clerk in 1996 and retired in 2007, said: “We are very honoured to have received this award. I would like to thank all of the town mayors for their support and for also giving us funding.

“We are desperately short of volunteers and would always welcome more help.”

Mr Bishop-Rowe said: “Presenting this award was one of the nicest moments of my time as mayor.”
