IT MIGHT be a small place, but Ingleton packs a powerful punch in the 'things to do' and 'reasons to visit' departments.

And as the Gazette discovered for its Love Local campaign, Ingleton isn't just for a day out ... it's for life.

From the glorious tops of Ingleborough, to the mysterious depths of White Scar Caves, no wonder Ingleton bills itself as 'one of the best playgrounds in the North West'.

But although the village is famous for its walking and caving, there is so much more here besides - for young and old, for the energetic, or for those who simply want to shop till they drop.

On high, the remains of an Iron Age fort can be seen on the summit plateau of Ingleborough at 2372 feet. Below ground, White Scar Cave is Britain's longest show cave, its subterranean magic a magnet for visitors.

There's the famous waterfalls walk too, a four-and-a-half trail via a series of spectacular waterfalls and geological features.

And, if you've worked up a sweat and need to cool off, then a dip in Ingleton's outdoor heated swimming pool, which is managed by the village community, should refresh you.

At this time of year, however, everyone has their sights set on one of Ingleton's annual crowd-pleasers, the folk festival which takes place from October 2 to 4, featuring concerts, pub sessions, street entertainment, even a comic song competition. All the events are free except for the main concert on Saturday when the star turn will be legendary Scottish folk group The McCalmans (www.ingletonfolk.co.uk).

Another Ingleton date for your diary is the late night Dickensian shopping evening on Friday, November 27.

"Everyone dresses in costume, there is a parade with Father Christmas, and a carousel," said publicity officer for the Ingleton and District Trades Association (IDTA), Debbie Kuhlmann.

The Association is working hard to promote Ingleton as a place to shop regularly, not just for a day out.

"We have an award-winning butcher, greengrocers, a wonderful new cake shop (Frumenty & Fluffin), and lots of lovely tea rooms and coffee shops. There is a fantastic atmosphere in the village and a great sense of community. We've got plenty of parking too."
