PEOPLE can gain a fascinating insight into the booming iron industry of yesteryear in Furness at a forthcoming event.
The Newland Iron Furnace, near Ulverston, is being restored to former glories thanks to a £44,000 English Heritage grant and the efforts of local volunteers.
And now, the Newland Furnace Trust, is gearing up for a rare open day with free guided tours on Saturday, September 12, from 10am to 4.30pm.
Secretary John Helme said: “Many people are not aware of the existence of what was once a thriving industry tucked away in Newland hamlet just off the A590.”
The trust say that if work had not been carried out on the furnace, which dates back to 1747, it would have gone to ruin.
Mr Helme added: “Much of the damage to the remains had been caused by the ingress of water over many years. The grant has enabled a protective roof to be built which will also preserve the exposed 19th century stack extension foundations. Work has begun on the new lower entrance gate and security railings.”
